Congratulations to Becky, Our May Member of the Month!

What or who brought you to High Function Fitness?
I was looking for a functional fitness gym that was between work and home. I really like the concept of movement and strength that supports life long health. I saw an advertisement for the gym on the Cummings sign, looked up the website, and I really liked your methods and strategies. Incorporating warm-ups, stretching, strength, endurance, agility, and balance are all really important to avoid injury and be healthy long term.

 

What was it like getting started? How did your first workout go?
Getting started was tough! My first workout was the descending ladder 28, 21, etc with wall balls and things I had never done before. The intensity was high and I was pretty sure I was going to die! HAHA! Needless to say, I didn’t complete the workout, sweated like crazy, was ridiculously sore but I didn’t die. I seriously questioned whether I was capable of this kind of work but decided to give myself time to acclimate. I noticed my tolerance increasing and I was able to do more which was good reinforcement. Once I got into a routine, I enjoyed it and made lots of progress.

 

How long have you been a member and what has changed in your life during that time due to your experience here?
I’ve been a member a bit over 3 years now I think. My strength and exercise tolerance has most certainly increased. I can do things I never thought I’d be able to and continue to find more challenges to push me forward.

 

What do you like about HFF that keeps you coming back?

You, Emily, the gang, and all of the camaraderie! Fun, challenging classes, that change up day to day and month to month. I don’t have to invent the wheel when it comes to exercise (I don’t have the training to design workouts), just show up and do the work. I also really value the small class size and the fact that the coaches keep us safe with form, provide encouragement, suggestions, and work with our injuries.

 

What class time do you attend the most, and are there any regular members you work out with at that time?
Of late, the noon class! Ally, Kristie, Craig, Bill, Linda, Aline, Kathy, Richard, Angie, Steph to name a few!

 

What are you most proud of accomplishing?
My 200+lb PR deadlift. 205 or 225? I can’t remember now.

 

What are some of your favorite workouts or experience(s) with HFF and the community there?
I really love personal training and lifting heavier weights. It’s a fun challenge and I keep proving to myself that I can do more athletic endeavors. I’ve also really loved the Zoom classes that keep me motivated and keep us connected. You and Emily have done a wonderful job making an unprecedented challenge and environment work on short notice. The sip and stretch are great too!

 

What are your short term and long term goals?
Lose body fat and lean out (hopefully in the short term!)  Build a foundation of strength, flexibility, agility that provides me long-lasting health and wellness.

 

What sort of life changes have you experienced because of HFF that you didn’t expect?
More resilience and confidence. I feel strong and therefore better equipped to handle challenges whether physical or just the day to day things life throws at us. If I can get through a tough workout, I can handle just about anything.

 

What advice do you have for our newer members or those thinking about jumping in?

Do it! You will never regret investing in your own health.  Also, remember to be gentle with yourself. Rome was not built in a day and change is not easy. Keep consistent. Scale things down as needed, build good form first and the rest will come with time. Challenge when appropriate. Break things down into small pieces and celebrate any and all progress. You are not competing with the class, only yourself. Everyone wants to see you succeed.

 

Fun Stuff:

  • Tell us a little about yourself – what is your life like outside the gym? Where do you work, do you have kids/pets/spouse/partner? What are some of your favorite hobbies outside the gym?

    I’m a physician assistant by training and practiced cardiothoracic surgery for over 23 years. I work in the biotech industry for the past year helping surgeons implant valves so I travel in New England. Currently single but looking for a long term relationship with a great guy. I share my home with two cats who like to “help” me workout by climbing on my shoulders or back while I do push-ups and stretch. They also assist in agility by darting out in front of me when doing shuttle sprints.I have a boat that I keep in the Adirondaks, which I adore. The lake is my happy place and I love to SUP in the evening when the water quiets down. I cook my own sauce and meatballs that my family loves.

 

  • Motto or Phrase you live by?Live, Love, Laugh. Do no harm. Good health is priceless.

 

  • Favorite music to listen to while working out?

    Dance or pop. Anything with a good, motivating beat. I don’t really have a preference.

 What is something we might not know about you?

  • I love to stand up paddle boarding and I’m an aspiring golfer. (but too embarrassed to play!)
